You can see our exact tour, here.

When to Visit La Paz

Choosing the right time to visit La Paz can make a big difference in your day trip experience. Here’s a breakdown of what each season offers so you can decide when’s best for your adventure:

Winter (December to February): Whale Watching Season

Winter is one of the most popular times to visit La Paz, especially for nature enthusiasts. From December to March, the Sea of Cortez is bustling with marine life as gray and humpback whales migrate to the area. This season is ideal if you’re interested in whale watching or snorkeling with gentle whale sharks, which are abundant from October to April. Check out our favorite tour for whale sharks, here. Plus, temperatures are pleasantly mild, ranging from the mid-60s to low 80s Fahrenheit (about 18-28°C), making it comfortable for outdoor activities. However, this is peak season, so expect more tourists and plan your visit early if you want to avoid crowds.

Spring (March to May): Great Weather with Fewer Crowds

Spring is another fantastic time to visit La Paz. The weather warms up a bit, with temperatures ranging from the low 70s to mid-90s Fahrenheit (21-35°C), making it ideal for sunbathing on beaches like Balandra and Tecolote without the intense summer heat. March is still prime time for whale shark encounters, but by April, the whale-watching season begins to wind down, and crowds thin out. Late spring is perfect if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and are keen on seeing La Paz in a more relaxed state.

Summer (June to August): High Temperatures and Off-Peak Season

Summer brings the hottest temperatures of the year, often reaching highs of over 100°F (38°C), which can make beach visits and outdoor activities more challenging. However, with fewer tourists around, summer offers a quieter and more local vibe, as well as lower accommodation and activity prices. If you don’t mind the heat and plan to stick to shaded spots or the cooler waters, summer can be a peaceful time to visit La Paz. Just be sure to pack plenty of sun protection, hydrate often, and time your beach visits for early morning or late afternoon.

Fall (September to November): A Mix of Heat, Rain, and Wildlife

Fall is a transitional season in La Paz. Early September may still be quite hot, but by October, temperatures begin to cool, reaching a more comfortable range of mid-80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (29-32°C). September is also the tail end of Baja’s hurricane season, so keep an eye on weather forecasts if you’re planning a trip in early fall. The payoff, however, is worth it: fall brings fewer crowds, vibrant landscapes, and the start of whale shark season. November, with its warm weather and reduced chance of rain, is an especially popular month for eco-tourism and beach lovers looking for a sunny getaway.

Best Overall Time to Visit

For the perfect mix of comfortable temperatures, marine life activity, and fewer tourists, late fall (November) and early spring (March-April) are the best times to plan a day trip to La Paz. These months strike a great balance between favorable weather, active wildlife encounters, and lower crowd levels, allowing you to fully enjoy all the natural beauty La Paz has to offer.

Practical Tips for Visiting La Paz

Stay Hydrated and Protected from the Sun

Even if you’re just visiting for a day, the Baja heat can be intense, especially in the summer months. Drink plenty of water, wear sun protection, and find shade whenever possible.

Avoid the Midday Heat at the Beaches

Balandra and Tecolote are both more enjoyable during the cooler parts of the day. If you’re able to, visit these beaches in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and heat.

Respect Local Wildlife

La Paz’s beaches and waters are home to many unique species, and preserving this beauty means respecting local wildlife. Follow any posted guidelines, avoid touching marine life, and be cautious of fragile ecosystems like mangroves.

Plan for Limited Connectivity

While Cabo San Lucas is well-connected, La Paz can feel a bit more remote. Some areas, especially on the beaches, may have limited or no cell service, so plan accordingly and download any maps or guides before you leave Cabo.
