Common Scams in Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas, like many tourist hotspots, has its share of scams. Knowing what to look out for can help you avoid falling victim to these schemes.
1. Timeshare Presentations
One of the most common scams in Cabo San Lucas involves aggressive timeshare presentations. Tourists are often lured with promises of free meals, excursions, or gifts, only to find themselves trapped in a high-pressure sales environment.
Pro Tip: If someone approaches you with an enticing offer, proceed with caution. It’s wise to decline offers that sound too good to be true, particularly in busy tourist areas.

2. Overpricing at Tourist Attractions
Many tourists have reported being overcharged for services and goods, especially at popular attractions. For instance, taxi drivers may refuse to use the meter and charge unreasonable flat rates.
Pro Tip: Always agree on a fare before starting your ride, or opt for official taxi services with fare charts. Additionally, for dining, check the menu prices before ordering.
3. Credit Card Scams
This one happened to us when visiting in October 2024. Despite being in Cabo San Lucas many times before, we did fall victim to not only being charged more than agreed upon, but were charged twice by the same merchant! Unfortunately, this is not uncommon, some vendors in Cabo San Lucas have been known to skim credit cards, charge more than what was agreed upon, or charge duplicate amounts. This is particularly problematic at outdoor markets or smaller establishments.
Pro Tip: Use cash when possible with these smaller vendors. If you do use a credit card, ALWAYS get a receipt, monitor your accounts carefully, and be sure to use a card with fraud protection.
U.S. Safety Warnings and Advice
The U.S. Department of State regularly issues travel advisories to inform citizens about safety conditions in various countries. Currently, Cabo San Lucas falls under a "Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution" warning. This advisory urges travelers to be more vigilant, particularly in certain areas and situations. The travel advisory levels vary throughout Mexico from a "Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution" to a "Level 4: Do not Travel", so be sure to check for increased travel advisories if traveling to other parts of Mexico. You can find all of the United States travel advisories here.

In comparison, similar advisories apply to many countries in western Europe, such as Italy, France, Spain, where tourists might face pickpocketing and scams. While the level of caution is the same, the nature of the risks can vary significantly.
