Why Visit Balandra Beach?

Balandra Beach is famous for its crystal-clear, shallow waters and unique desert-meets-ocean scenery. The iconic Mushroom Rock ("El Hongo") is a must-see landmark and the perfect spot for a photo op. Balandra is also an ecological reserve, which means its beauty has been carefully preserved, offering visitors a tranquil experience with limited access of how many guests may visit each day.

Whether you want to relax on the soft white sand, wade into the calm waters, kayak around the bay, or hike nearby trails for stunning panoramic views, Balandra Beach offers something for everyone.

When to Visit Balandra Beach

Best Time of Year

The best time to visit Balandra Beach is from late October to May when the weather is pleasantly warm but not scorching. These months offer cooler temperatures, less humidity, and fewer tourists. Summer (June to September) can be quite hot and you are more likely to encounter jellyfish during these months, although we visited at the end of October and we were stung by tiny jellyfish, so tiny we couldn't see them in the water. Hurricane season peaks in August and September, so plan accordingly if you’re visiting during these months, because they are the rainiest months of the year.

Best Days and Times

To avoid crowds, try to visit on a weekday. Weekends and holidays tend to attract more locals and tourists alike. Arrive early in the morning to secure your spot, as the beach has a visitor cap to preserve its natural beauty. This means only 450 visitors are allowed in at a time, and once that limit is reached, it’s one in, one out.

Pro Tip: The beach is divided into two shifts—morning (8 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and afternoon (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.)—so plan your visit accordingly.

How to Get to Balandra Beach

From La Paz

Balandra Beach is located about 30 minutes north of La Paz, making it an easy day trip. You can rent a car and drive along Highway 11, which is well-paved and offers scenic desert views along the way. There’s a parking area near the beach, but it can fill up quickly, so arriving early is key.

From Cabo San Lucas

If you’re staying in Cabo San Lucas, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive to Balandra Beach. The drive is straightforward and offers stunning coastal and desert scenery, so make it part of the adventure! Alternatively, you can book a day tour from Cabo that includes transportation.

Public Transportation

For budget travelers, there are buses that run from La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, and SAn Jose del Cabo to El Tecolote Beach, but they do not drop you off directly at Balandra Beach. From the bus stop, you will need to take a taxi or walk, it is about a 10 minute walk to reach Balandra beach. We did not try this personally, but ffrom my research the busses appear to be reported as reliable and fairly timely. You can check the schedule on their website here.

Excursions to Balandra Beach

If you prefer a guided experience, there are several excursions available on platforms like TripAdvisor and Viator. Many tours include transportation, guided activities like kayaking or snorkeling, and even stops at nearby attractions. This is the tour we took here

Here is an excursion that focuses on seeing the ocean life through snorkeling, kayaking, and a hike.

Is it Safe to Visit Balandra Beach?

Yes, Balandra Beach is generally very safe for tourists. The area is known for its tranquil environment and friendly locals. However, as with any travel destination, it’s always wise to take some precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings, as petty theft can occur in crowded areas. When hiking, stick to marked trails to avoid getting lost or encountering wildlife. Additionally, if you’re swimming or kayaking, always be mindful of weather conditions and ocean currents, even though the water is usually extremely calm. In the waters, you will want to be cautious since there can be stingrays and jellyfish.

What to Bring to Balandra Beach

Since Balandra is an ecological reserve, there are minimal facilities, so it’s essential to come prepared.

Here’s what you’ll need:

- Water and Snacks: There are no restaurants or food vendors on-site, so pack plenty of water and non-perishable snacks.

- Sunscreen: Opt for reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the delicate marine ecosystem.

- Shade: Bring a beach umbrella or tent for shade, as there’s little natural cover. Before entering the reserve there are generally locals renting umbrellas and chairs.

- Swimwear and Towels: The water is irresistible, so bring your swim gear.

- Water Shoes: The sandy bottom is soft, but water shoes can be helpful for exploring rocky areas.

- Snorkel Gear: The clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, and you’ll often spot colorful fish.

- Cash: If you’re planning to kayak or paddleboard, you might need cash for rentals.
